Lady Hornets’ Season Ends In Region I Sectionals

Hundred 71, St John 67

The red-hot Hundred Hornets have won their last three games, ending with a 71-67 victory over Bellaire St. John inside the Hornets Nest in Hundred Feb. 15 on the Hornets' Senior Nite.

The hosts took a 20-18 lead after one period of play and duplicated the same score in the second stanza for a four-point advantage at the break.

However, the Irish outscored the Hornets 21-15 to take a one-point lead with eight minutes remaining in the game. Hundred responded in front of their home crowd with a 16-10 run to gain their third straight victory.

Rusty Morris recorded a double-double, scoring a game-high 32 points, grabbing 12 rebounds ,and dishing out five assists to lead the Hornets. Kirk Shriver added 19 points and hauled in six boards, while Chris Varner contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.

In addition, Andrew King and Brandon Armstrong teamed for 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hornets will finish their regular season against the Valley Lumberjacks tonight, with the junior varsity game set to tip off at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow.

Hundred 71, East Richland 60

Brandon Armstrong scored a career-high 27 points and pulled down seven rebounds, as Hundred got by East Richland 62-60 at Ohio University Eastern Feb. 12. In addition, Rusty Morris just missed getting a triple double with 17 points, 16 rebounds, but only nine assists.

Each team finished the first period with 13 points. But at halftime, Hundred had netted 13 points and held East Richland to 10 markers for a 26 to 23 advantage.

The Hornets came out firing in the third frame, adding 21 points in the period. In the next frame, East Richland also caught fire. But, it was a little too late and Hundred went on for a two-point victory.

Kirk Shriver and Andrew King each dropped in six markers, while Davin Copeland and Holden Moore each tacked on a deuce. Chris Varner and Courtland Armstrong each nailed a free throw.

Weirton Madonna used an 18-2 run in the first quarter and went on to cruise to a 39-24 victory in Region I, Section I play Madonna Land Feb. 16.

Lady Hornet Katie Tennant finished her high school career with a team-high 11 points, while Emily Ebert, Oshana Topp, and Nikki Cunningham each netted four points and Josie Phillips drained a free throw.

Tyler Consolidated 83, Hundred 56

The Hornets' Rusty Morris tallied the area's first triple-double of the season in boys' basketball. He scored 27 points, hauled in 12 rebounds, and blocked 10 shots, but it wasn't enough to get by Tyler Consolidated, who won by the score of 83-56, Feb. 18 in Kidwell.

Teammate Chris Varner chipped in with 11 markers, while Kirk Shriver tallied eight points that included a pair of long range bombs. Andrew King contributed six points, while Courtland Armstrong finished the Hornet scoring with a pair of deuces.

Lady Blue Dons 39, Hundred 24

Weirton Madonna used a 18-2 run in the first quarter and went on to cruise to a 39-24 win in the Region I, Section I showdown in Madonna Land Feb. 16.
