Magnolia 90,

Monroe Central 79

Zach Wilhoite nearly earned a triple-double, scoring a game-high 24 markers, hauling in 13 rebounds, and blocking eight shots, to lead Magnolia to a nail-biting 90-79 victory over Monroe Central Feb. 8 in Woodsfield.

The Eagles led 24-21 after one period, with nine of those points from Wilhoite. The Blue would take a 44-35 advantage into the locker room.

In the third period, the Seminoles cut into the Blue Eagle advantage before Magnolia put away its host with a big 29-point fourth period blitz to gain the nod. Wilhoite and Mark Winters each fouled out in the fourth period.

Winters followed Wilhoite in scoring with 19 points, eight assists, four rebounds, four blocks, and two steals. Spencer Campbell and Preston Boswell teamed up on 35 points that included a threeball. Meanwhile, Stephen Rogalski tacked on 11 markers, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals, while Kyle Elliott added six points, six rebounds, two steals, and as many assists.

The Eagles made 22 of 32 free throws, while Monroe Central netted 11 of 18, which proved to be the difference.

The Eagles played the River Pilots for the third time this year on Tuesday with results unavailable by press time. If they won, they will play for the OVAC Class-3A championship at Ohio University Eastern at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. If they lost, they will play for third place, either at home or on the road, this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Pilots 56,

Zeps 39

River High School’s Landyn Ramsay came off the bench to lead her school to a 56-39 victory over Shenandoah in the OVAC semi-final Feb. 6 inside R.L. Potts Gymnasium.

The Lady Pilots and the Lady Zeps battled neck-and-neck throughout the first period with Laken Ramsay ripping the cords on a pair of charity tosses for the Pilots’ final tally in the first period and a 12-11 lead.

After sitting most of the first period in foul trouble, Cassidy McCullough opened the second frame with a triple. The Zeps matched that triple with one of their own. Landyn Ramsay then gave the hosts the spark they needed when she knocked down back-to-back triples, pushing the Pilot advantage to 21-14 and forcing the visitors into a time out.

After the break, Shenandoah netted a deuce and a pitch from Leslie Young to Landyn Ramsay scored a basket. Jensen Caretti then blocked a Zep shot and threw the length of the floor to Landyn Ramsay for another easy bucket that brought the rather quiet Pilot fans to their feet in appreciation.

Shenadoah cashed in with a triple, but Caretti drilled a nice 15-foot jumper. McCullough tacked on a deuce and was fouled in the act. She missed the charity toss, but Caretti was Johnny-on-the-spot with a put-back to give the hosts a 10-point lead.

Shenandoah would finish the period with a mini run to close the gap to seven points at the half.

In the third period, both teams scored a dozen points, but the Lady Pilots would finish the game with a 10-0 run to gain the nod.

Laken Ramsay and Haylee Bowers had a pair of steals during their couple minutes in the game, while Caretti added a block to lead the rally defensively.

Landyn Ramsay paced the Pilots with 14 points on 6-6 shooting from the floor that included a pair of threeballs. McCullough backed that up with 12 points that also included a pair of bonus bombs. In foul trouble throughout most of the game, she would foul out midway into the fourth period.

Caretti and Laken Ramsay each netted nine markers, while Bowers and Emile Weaver each tallied six points for the Pilots. Bowers and Caretti snagged 10 and eight rebounds, respectively,

Caretti and Laken Ramsay paced the Pilots with four and three steals, respectively, while Weaver paced the Lady Pilots with five of the team’s 11 assists.

Lady Bishops 58,

Lumberjills 52

The Lumberjills’ Megan Bucher scored a game-high 20 points, including a trio of long range bonus bombs. But it wasn’t enough, as Bishop Donahue went on to win 58-52 Feb. 9 in McMechen.

Sarah Bassett had a nice game, scoring nine points and hauling in a game-high 15 rebounds. Karissa Headley followed with eight markers, while Alisha Carter sank three triples. In addition, Madison Arnold added four points, while Abigail Willey and Erin “Twiggy” Brown each netted a deuce and Samantha Thomas sank a free throw.

Lady Red Knights 70,

Lumberjills 20

In the OVAC Consolation matchup, it was all Toronto, winning by 70-20 Feb. 7 in Pine Grove. Carter paced the ‘Jills with a pair of threeballs, while Bassett netted a pair of deuces. Bucher followed with three points, while Brown, Headley, and Brooke Brown each sank a deuce and Cassidy Price, a charity toss.

The Lumberjills will visit Hundred tonight in girls’ action, with the junior varsity tip scheduled for 6 p.m. and the varsity game to follow.

Cameron 98,

Hundred 48

The Hornets’ Rusty Morris scored 19 points and cleaned the glass with 13 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to get by the Cameron Dragons, who took away a 98-48 win from the Hornets Nest Feb. 6 in a regular season makeup game.

Kirk Shriver fired up the cords with four baskets from beyond the arc on his way to a 14-point outing. Brandon Armstrong tallied eight markers and dished out three assists, while teammate Greg Stewart netted seven points and hauled in seven rebounds.

In addition, Hornet point guard Chris Varner had a team-high six assists and a pair of steals.

In the junior varsity matchup, it was a little of the same, as the Dragons left the Hornets Nest with a 52 to 24 victory.

Andrew King had a team-high eight markers, while Hunter Goddard contributed seven tallies. Copeland Armstrong knocked in a triple, made three steals, and dished out five assists. Greg Jones, Davin Copeland, and Holden Moore each drilled a deuce, while Ethan Umstead grabbed eight rebounds.
