Lady Pilots Finish Second In OVAC?Class-3A Tilt

February 13, 2013
Wetzel Chronicle

After falling behind 13-2 after one period of play, the defending OVAC Class-3A Fort Frye Cadets never looked back in handing this season's top-seeded River Pilots a 46-22 thumping in the girls' basketball championships at Ohio University Eastern's Health and Physical Education Building.

"Fort Frye is a good basketball team," River Head Coach Rick Isaly said during a post-game press conference. "They're sound defensively and they're good on the offensive end. You have to play your 'A' game when you play this team if you're going to beat them, and we didn't play our 'A' game today."

The Lady Pilots made a run in the second eight minutes, cutting their deficit to six points with just under a minute to play before the half. But, the Cadets would knock down a three-pointer with 31 ticks on the clock to give them a 24-15 advantage at the break.

"That's something we didn't want to do is fall behind early, and that's exactly what we did," Isaly added. "We made that one run there in the second quarter, but the third quarter was another bad one."

Indeed it was. In fact, the Pilots only scored a total of seven markers in the second half of play. Hitting only three of 15 shots from the floor for 20 percent, and only 10 of 34 for the game.

The Lady Pilots' Cassidy McCullough paced the Pilots with eight points, while Laken Ramsay netted five markers, including one three-point basket. In addition, Emile Weaver contributed three markers, while Jensen Caretti and Leslie Young each netted a deuce. Caretti also hauled in a team-high three rebounds.

In other OVAC title games, University defeated Morgantown 53-41 in Class 5-A; Steubenville beat Martins Ferry 45-36 in Class 4-A; Shadyside took care of Wheeling Central 53-44 in Class 2-A; and Connoton Valley rocked Bellaire St. John 50-26.
