Two of the things we are always grateful for are the presence of West Virginia Northern Community College in our area and the opportunity to pause on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day to ponder the many messages he delivered.
In a way, those two things are coming together Thursday during a special Lunch and Learn presentation starting at 11 a.m. Unfortunately this WVNCC event is happening at the Wheeling campus, but we know many Wetzel Countians drive to Wheeling for many, varied reasons. This could be one of them if you are able to attend a mid-day event.
The Underground Railroad and its connection to the Upper Ohio Valley will be discussed. The presenter will be Dr. John Mattox, curator of the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing, Ohio. The free and open to the public Lunch and Learn event will be held in the B&O Building auditorium on the downtown Wheeling campus, 1704 Market St.
Lunch will be served beginning at 11 a.m. and Mattox will speak at 11:30 a.m. The event is part of WVNCC's commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Members of the public wishing to attend are asked to provide an RSVP by today to Ida Williams, WVNCC Student Activities program coordinator, by calling 304-214-8917 or by emailing her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Underground Railroad Museum features an extensive collection of publications, books, memorabilia, and other articles.
