Lady ‘Cats Win One, Drop Pair To St. John

St John 65, Paden City 36

Ten Lady ‘Cats dented the Bob Burton Gymnasium scoreboard Jan. 5, but it wasn’t enough, as Bellaire St. John took care of business, winning 65-36 over Paden City.

St. John wasted little time gaining a 23-7 advantage after one period and cruised the rest of the way. The Lady ‘Cats responded with a nice showing in the second and third periods. But, the Lady Irish would add the exclamation point with a 19-8 fourth period to gain the nod.

Logan Cosper and Kayla Hizer each paced the Wildcats with seven points, while Taylor Cosper went bombs away with a pair of baskets from beyond the arc.

In addition, Lynnsie Parsons and Hannah Stanley each recorded four markers, while Myah “Shark” Charkawi was held to a season-low three points. Darien Ritchie and Cydney Blatt each tacked on a deuce, while Kayla Barker and Kelsey Loy each swished a free throw.

Defensively, Charkawi made four steals and hauled in a team-high eight rebounds, while Taylor Cosper grabbed five boards and dished out four assists.

Paden City 66, East Richland 33

Charkawi tickled the twine for a game-high 18 markers that included a pair of three-point baskets to lead Paden City to an easy 66-33 victory over East Richland Jan. 4 inside Bob Burton Gymnasium.

The Wildcats raced out to a 22-10 lead after one period of play and never looked back. Paden City’s stifling defense held Richland to only a bucket in the second period, while putting up 13 markers for themselves to grab a 35-12 advantage at the break.

In the third period, the Lady ‘Cats were clicking on all cylinders once more, scoring 18 markers while their defense held Richland to four buckets.

Charkawi led a 14-steal attack with four, while Logan Cosper took away three. As a team, the Wildcats made 14 assists, with Taylor Cosper leading the way with four, while Logan Cosper and Hannah Stanley each recorded three.

The Lady ‘Cats will host Union Grant in the first annual girls Hometown Invitational Tournament at 6 p.m. Jan. 12. The ‘Cats are the number one seed.

St John 54, Paden City 36

Bellaire St. John used a 15-3 third-quarter run to take out Paden City 54-36 in girls’ basketball action Dec. 31 at Bellaire St. John High School.

Bellaire held an 18-11 advantage after one period of play and punched its lead to 34-21 at the break before the hosts put the game away in the third period. Logan Cosper paced the Lady ‘Cats with nine points and six rebounds, while Myah Charkawi followed with eight markers that included the ‘Cats only triple of the afternoon.

In addition, Cydney Blatt contributed six points, while Taylor Cosper added four points and four assists. Teammate Kayla Hizer also tallied four points, while Lynnsie Parson tacked on three markers and Lynah Stanley scored a deuce.
