‘Cats Win Bob, Sharon Burton Christmas Classic

In the Bob and Sharon Burton Christmas Classic at Paden City, it was the host Paden City Wildcats taking the championship bout with Tyler Consolidated, 65-46, while Valley defeated Hundred, 62-35 in the consolation matchup Dec. 8.

In the championship contest, the young Wildcats raced out to a 12-5 advantage after one period of play before the Knights closed the gap at the break to one point, 24-23.

However, from there on, it was all Paden City as the young Wildcat team outscored the Knights 41-23 to gain the home court victory in the Christmas Classic.

The Wildcats netted 37-47 free throws to put the game away, with PCHS sophomores Zach Heasley and Kennedy Cain knocking down 29-34 from the stripe. Cain led all scorers with 22 points, 16-20 of them from the charity stripe. Heasley tacked on 13-14 from the line and was 5-8 from the floor to finish with 23 points.

Wildcat freshman Luke Cooper and sophomore Brandon Cross each netted eight markers, while senior Drew Bidwell and freshman Devin Price each tacked on a deuce.

Heasley pulled down a team-high nine boards, while Cain grabbed eight off the glass and Cooper hauled in six rebounds Cain also made four steals.

For their efforts, Heasley and Cain made the All-Tournament Team, while the Silver Knights’ Dylan Romine received the same honor.

In the consolation contest, it was all Valley Lumberjacks, as they pumped in seven long range baskets en route to a 62-35 victory.

The ‘Jacks got two baskets by Tristen Kocher and Jack Wells in the opening period to grab a 13-4 lead after the first quarter of play. Kocher, Jordan Anderson and Trey Streets each went bombs away from beyond the arc to help Valley take a comfortable 29-15 lead at the break.

It was a little of the same in the third period as Kocher hooked up with Hayden Lancaster with each going bombs away in the third period to lead the ‘Jacks with a 17 point quarter to grab a 46-24 advantage with one quarter remaining.

Kocher continued to light up the scoreboard, hooking up with his third three pointer of the game, while Tyler Hayes picked up his first long range basket. Joey Preat added three jumpers to carry the Lumberjacks to their third-place finish.

Kirk Shriver paced the Hornets with 10 points that included a basket from beyond the arch, while Levi Simpson, Holden Moore and Brandon Armstrong each tallied five points. Chris Varner tacked on four points, while Andrew King netted three points and Greg Stewart a deuce.

For Valley, Trey Streets netted a game-high 15 points, while Jack Wells netted 14 points and Kocher tallied 13 markers that included three triples. Both Kocher and Wells grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double each and Kocher added two steals.

In addition, Hayes and Ryan Lemley each posted six markers, while Anderson netted a triple. Hayden Lancaster and Joey Preat scored a deuce and a pair of freebies, respectively. Lancaster also brought in seven boards and blocked five Hornet shots.

Kocher, Streets and Shriver were each selected to the all-tournament squad.

In the opener of the classic, Tyler Consolidated jumped out to a 22-5 advantage and went on to defeat Hundred 64-32.

Shriver tallied 10 points that included a threeball, while Armstrong contributed seven points, that included a triple to pace the Hornet attack.

Stewart and Andrew King each followed with four points, while Moore and Hunter Goddard each drained a basket from beyond the arch.

In the night cap of the opener, Paden City’s Cain tallied a season-high 25 points that included one basket from beyond the arc to pace the Wildcats to a 60-33 victory over the Valley Lumberjacks.

The Wildcats opened the game with a 17-14 advantage, paced by the outside shooting of Heasley and Cain who each netted one from beyond the arc, while Lancaster swished one for the Lumberjacks.

In the second period, the Wildcats drained eight free throws and a pair of two pointers, while the ‘Jacks were held to a pair of deuces and three free throws to grab a 29-21 lead at intermission.

However, the second half was all Paden City. Five different Wildcats netted a deuce or more – compared to a Streets triple and a Hayes deuce – to extend the Wildcat advantage to 44-26. The ‘Cats went on a 16-7 run in the final period to get the win.

Streets was the only double-digit scorers for the ‘Jacks, while Hayes and Lancaster evenly split 10 markers to pace Valley. Kocher was held to four markers, while Anderson drained a triple. Peyton Palmer and Troy Hubbard each netted a deuce.

Besides Cain’s 25 points, Heasley netted 14 markers, including a three-point basket, while Cooper tallied eight points. Cross and Bidwell each contributed two baskets, while Allen netted a deuce and a free throw. Logan Carroll tallied a deuce.

Paden City out rebounded Valley 29-8, including 10 offensive boards. Cain and Cooper each grabbed six off the glass, while Lancaster paced the ‘Jacks with three rebounds and had a blocked shot. The ‘Cats’, Devin Price had four of the Wildcats’ eight steals, while Hayes had two of four steals for the Lumberjacks. Cain had four of nine Paden City assists.
