By Staff | Dec 5, 2012

In a mutual season opener, the Magnolia Lady Blue Eagles used a 20-8 run in the opening frame and finished the game with a 28-9 run to hand the Paden City Lady Wildcats a 63-35 defeat Nov. 27 inside the MHS HammerDome.

After both teams traded buckets in the first period, Magnolia would connect on four straight buckets, powered by three Jasmine Litton put-backs to build a 10-2 advantage before Paden City’s Myrah Charkawi sank a pair of baskets to close the gap to 10-6.

However, the Big Blue went to their bread and butter, Mallory Chapman, for two straight baskets before Litton sank a deuce to give them a 14-6 lead.

After a Paden City time out, Magnolia sophomore Kiera Standiford knocked down a deuce and hit a pair of free throws before Paden City’s senior guard Logan Cosper drained a bucket from the top of the key. However, the Eagles’ Katie Blatt ended the scoring with a jumper to give the hosts a comfortable 20-8 lead after one period of action.

In the second quarter, the Eagles outscored the ‘Cats 8-7 and held a 28-15 advantage as both teams headed into the locker room.

Standiford opened the third period with a pair of freebies, while the ‘Cats’ Cydney Blatt cashed in one of her two charity tosses. Standiford would then sink a deuce before Charkawi banked in a jumper from the wing for the Lady ‘Cats..

Chapman tickled the twine from beyond the arc, right before Paden City scored the next eight points, forcing MHS Head Coach Dave Chapman to take a time out with their lead shrinking to nine points, 35-26, with 4:34 to go in the third.

After the short break, the Eagles responded with an 11-5 run, powered by three Grace Berisford baskets to give the hosts a 46-31 lead heading into the final period.

The Eagles put the scrappy Wildcats away with a 17-4 run to get the win, with Chapman and Standiford combining to score eight of the game’s final 12 points.

Leading the way for the ‘Cats was Charkawi with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Cydney Blatt tallied seven markers. Logan Cosper was held to three baskets, while Taylor Cosper and Kayla Hizer each netted two points. Kelsey Loy sank a free throw.

The Eagles had four girls in double figures, with Chapman leading the way with 18 points that included a pair of bonus bombs. She also pulled down seven boards and blocked four Wildcat shots. Standiford had the first double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds. She also was perfect at the charity stripe, draining all six tries.

In addition, Berisford added 13 points that included a triple, while Litton ended the night with 10 points. She played limited minutes, having to sit out a good portion of the contest because of foul trouble.

Audrey Gibb and Katie Blatt each scored three points, while freshman Cierra Fowler added a deuce. Blatt led the Eagles with five assists, while Gibb and Chapman each recorded three and Abby Durig contributed two. Gibb made three blocks, while pulling down five boards and Blatt blocked four Paden City shots.
