Black Thursday?

November 20, 2012
Wetzel Chronicle

Honestly, I've never been one of those people who complained that the Christmas season began too soon. I love the season and, quite frankly, I could stand to have the joy, decorations, and festivities last a bit longer than they do.

I didn't think Thanksgiving was ignored or forgotten. Rather, I thought Thanksgiving was part of it all, sort of incorporated into all the hub-bub--a term I use in the most affectionate way possible.

Did you notice I used the word "thought" in that last sentence. That's a past tense word. As in, I formerly thought that way. Formerly, in the past, before Black Friday became an even blacker Thursday.

Like many people, I am greatly disturbed that most major retailers are starting their big after-Thanksgiving sales on the real holiday, not on their rightful day -- the holiday they created, Black Friday. Some even start before the giant turkey, Snoopy, and all the others float above the streets of New York City.

I love sharing both holidays with my family. On Thanksgiving we not only enjoy the traditional meal and the company of our family and friends, but we enjoy going through the sale fliers. We dream, compare prices, learn of our likes and dislikes, and drop gift hints -- sometimes like lead balloons. Then the next day some of us hit the stores to try to snatch up those bargains. It is all part of our traditions.

So what will happen this year??I'm not sure. I hope we don't have family members leave our family gathering to save a few bucks. I know I won't be doing that. Honestly, I'm not even positive that I'll hit the big stores Friday. The day has lost its luster. Thanks a lot Madison?Avenue. Thanks a lot.

Ah, but there is a silver lining just past all the "black" clouds. Small Business Saturday is something I'll gladly support-before I need to be in the stands cheering on the Blue Eagles.
