Quilters Meeting Set For Oct. 20
West Virginia Quilters, Inc. will hold their fall meeting Saturday in New Martinsville. Hosted by the Stitching Sisters Quilt Guild of New Martinsville and the Fort Henry Piecemakers of Wheeling, the meeting will be held at the downtown New Martinsville campus of West Virginia Northern Community College.
While the meeting begins at 1 p.m., vendors such as Quintilla’s Fabrics of Pleasants Ridge (near Middlebourne) and Theresa’s Fabrics of Moundsville will open at 11 a.m.
Perhaps the highlight of the meeting will be speaker Teri Henderson Tope who will begin her talk after the business meeting is completed.
Tope is the author of “Applique in Reverse”, published by the American Quilter’s Society, and designer of over 35 patterns for her company, Material Girl Designs (“http://www.materialgirldesigns.com”>www.materialgirldesigns.com).
She is a member of The Applique Society since 1998 and served six years on the TAS board as marketing chair. She is a member of The National Quilter’s Society and its Columbus, Ohio, chapter, The Quintessential Quilting, of which she served as vice president and president, and the American Quilters Society.
“Quilting has been my joy, and sharing it has been one of my greatest pleasures,” said Tope. “It seems like I have sewn all my life starting with doll clothes and then on to 4-H clothing projects.
“It wasn’t until being put on bed rest while pregnant with my oldest daughter that the quilting bug really took effect. Out of that tiny first apartment came some wonderful quilts and a huge learning curve.”
Predominately a quilter for 27 years, Tope tries to stitch a little every single day.
“When asked about my quilting specialty, my favorite response to give is that ‘I wear my scarlet letter with pride. I APPLIQUE!'” shares Tope. Being a bit dyslexic and disliking its repetitive nature, piecing is not one of her favorite things to do. “In fact it gives me hives and I only do it under duress. . just kidding,” shared Tope. “I currently am on this reverse applique adventure and it is taking me to some pretty neat places.”
Tope loves to travel, teach, lecture, and share her joy of applique-which she will undoubtedly do in New Martinsville Saturday.
There is no charge to attend the meeting or lecture. All quilters and those interested in the artform are invited to attend.
