Bras Will Span Bridge Saturday

By Staff | Oct 17, 2012

As the nation marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this month, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Monroe County planning committee decided to put together an awareness and fund raising event that would promote breast cancer awareness while raising funds for the American Cancer Society to help kickoff their 2013 Relay For Life fund raising efforts.

On Oct. 20 from noon until 4 p.m., bridge go’ers will see quite a sight as they cross into Ohio or West Virginia via the Hannibal-New Martinsville Bridge. There will be bras lining the bridge’s fence from side to side, but the committee needs the public’s help. In order to make sure there are enough bras to make it the whole way across, (and hopefully back the other side), community members are urged to donate a decorated or undecorated bra and $10. Bras and donations can be dropped off at the X-ray Department at Wetzel County Hospital or at Hannibal Elementary School; or sent to Crystal Longwell, PO Box 152, Hannibal, OH 43931. Checks can be made payable to the American Cancer Society.

Throughout the four-hour event, along with the bras lining the fence across the bridge there will be entertainment, as well as food at the Hannibal Lock & Dam site. There will also be event t-shirts for sale. To guarantee a t-shirt, please pre-order by contacting Crystal Longwell at 740-483-10254. The American Cancer Society reminds women ages 40 and older about the importance of getting a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year to find breast cancer in its early, more treatable stages. “Countless Americans who have never had breast cancer and more than 2.9 million who are surviving the disease will celebrate a birthday this year, thanks in part to the lifesaving efforts of the American Cancer Society and supporters,” said Chad Gardner of the American Cancer Society. “This event is a great opportunity to remind women of the life saving benefits of breast cancer screenings.”

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to help change the course of cancer by finding cures and supporting programs and services for all people facing the disease. The 2013 version of the Relay For Life of Monroe County event will be held June 7-8, 2013. The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end cancer for good. As a global grassroots force of three million volunteers, they fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community.

They save lives by helping you stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early, helping you get well by being there for you during and after a diagnosis, by finding cures through groundbreaking discovery and fighting back through public policy. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, they turn what they know about cancer into what they do.
