Area High School Volleyball Takes Center Stage

River-Monroe Central

The Pilots’ Hannah Jones recorded 39 digs and Annie Turner made 31 assists, while Brielle Williams, Mackenzie Wade, and Monica Curtis teamed for 51 points and six service aces. But that wasn’t strong enough to ward off a victory by Monroe Central Oct. 1 at R. L. Potts Gymnasium.

After losing the first set 25-16, the Pilots fought back to win the second set, 22-25. Monroe took advantage of the tired Lady Pilots and won the next two sets to take home the match, three games to one.

Besides the 39 digs by Jones, Curtis and Mackenzie Marshall added 18 and 15 digs, respectively. Wade contributed nine digs, while Turner, Williams, Caretti, and Leslie Young each made two digs.

At the net, Caretti held her ground and rejected nine Seminole shots, while Turner blocked three attempts and Williams and Young each turned away one Monroe shot.

Williams also smacked eight kills, while Young had five and Marshall accomplished two kills to complete the Lady Pilot stats.

Paden City-Beallsville

The Lady Blue Devils swept Paden City in girls’ high school volleyball action Oct. 1, defeating the Lady ‘Cats 18-25, 19-25, and 23-25 inside Bob Burton Gymnasium.

Taylor Cosper had a team-high 15 service points, while Graeson Baker contributed a dozen markers. Logan Cosper and Lynnsie Parsons each added 10 points for the Lady Wildcats. Josie Fox tallied eight points, while Myah Charkawi tacked on five markers.

At the net, Parsons blasted 26 spikes with eight finding their marks, while Haley Hizer and Megan Pierce teamed for 31 spikes. Eleven of them found a home, while Baker blocked four Blue Devil point attempts. Baker also recorded a team-high 12 digs for the home team.

In addition, Charkawi and Fox shared 13 digs, while Parsons and Taylor Cosper each recorded four, and Logan Cosper, three.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 20-6 on the season.

Paden City-Warren-Tyler

Paden City fell to Warren High School, 10-25 and 19-25 and to Tyler Consolidated 14-25 and 13-25 in straight sets at a tri-match Sept. 29 in Kidwell.

Taylor Cosper scored 15 points and had eight digs, while Charkawi netted 12 points, four kills, and made 12 digs to lead Paden City. Baker netted nine points, five kills, 10 digs, and blocked two shots, while Parsons followed with eight service points, six kills, and eight digs.

Fox produced five points from her service position while adding eight digs. Pierce and Haley Hizer had eight and three kills, respectively. Logan Cosper made 87 sets in the two matches, while making 24 assists and two digs.

Magnolia-Wheeling Central

A balanced team effort helped Magnolia take care of Wheeling Central in straight sets, 25-20, 25-13, and 25-15 Oct. 2 inside the HammerDome on Breast Cancer Awareness Night.

Playing with a pink volleyball with most of the Lady Eagles wearing pink socks and ribbons, Magnolia jumped on the Lady Knights early and often on their way to an easy victory.

Four Blue Eagle netters scored in double figures, while all 10 players made their mark during the night. Fourteen MHS service aces and outstanding volleys with pin-point accuracy, coupled with outstanding digs, kept the Maroon Knights shell-shocked.

Half of Lady Eagle Ashley Moore’s 16 points came via her pin-point serves, while Mallory Chapman served up 15-points that included four service aces. Emily and Erinn Clegg combined for 25 points, while Kiera Standiford and Hillary Feldmeier teamed for 13 points.

Moore and Lauren Cline shared 28 assists, while Chapman made three assists, three blocks, and had a team-high 18 digs. In addition, Abby Durig added nine digs and Emily Clegg had eight on the night. Feldmeier contributed five digs, Erinn Clegg marked up four, and Standiford had three digs.

Making a mess on the HammerDome floor with their devastating spikes where Katie and Audrey Gibb with seven kills each, while Standiford and Chapman added six and four kills, respectively.

There is only one home match left at the HammerDome, on Oct. 16, Senior Night against the Brooke Bruins at 6 p.m.

Magnolia – Parkersburg South Huntington – Preston

The Lady Eagles lost two and won one in tournament play last weekend at Parkersburg South High School.

Magnolia lost 18-25 and 15-25 to the hosts before plastering Preston County 25-11 and 25-23. In a barn-burner finale, Huntington took care of Magnolia 18-25 and 25-27.

In the three matches, Moore and Feldmeier each scored 24 service points, while Emily and Erinn Clegg teamed for 45 points, drilled 17 service points, and Chapman and Standiford shared 27 service points and seven aces.

Chapman had a team-high 26 kills, 24 digs, and four blocks in the three matches, while Moore added 19 assists in the win over Preston. Standiford responded with 14 kills and two blocks, while Emily Clegg added six digs.

Magnolia-Brooke

Magnolia had five double-digit scorers, but fell to Brooke in a marathon Oct. 4, by the scores 21-25, 25-17, 13-25, 25-21, and 15-13.

The Sisters Clegg combined for 35 service points, including seven aces, while Chapman was busy netting 15 points, two aces, 15 kills, 12 digs, and four blocks.

In addition, Moore and Cline evenly split 26 points, with Cline throwing in with 21 assists. Standiford contributed eight points, an ace, six kills, and made five blocks.

Paden City – River

The Lady Pilots made it a season sweep over Paden City, winning 25-14, 25-22, and 25-23 in R. L. Potts Gymnasium Oct. 4 on Senior Night.

Baker tallied a team-high 14 points for the Lady Wildcats. She added three kills and five digs, while Logan Cosper tallied 11 markers, 25 assists, and made a dig to lead the ‘Cats.

Taylor Parsons scored 10 points, including an ace and five digs, while Charkawi tallied 10 points, one ace, two kills, and made eight digs. Parsons had eight service points, 11 kills, and 10 digs, while Fox contributed six points and three digs. Pierce, Blatt, and Hizer teamed for 10 kills.

For the homestanding Lady Pilots, Jones had a game-high 15 points, four aces, and 15 digs, while Williams netted 14 points, four aces, eight kills, and made three blocks. Wade, Curtis, and Turner each contributed nine points, with Turner providing 24 assists.

In addition, Marshall tallied seven markers, three service aces, four kills, and made 13 digs, while Caretti, Young, and Cieszeski teamed with 14 kills and nine blocks.

River-Fort Frye

The Lady Pilots ran into a wall Oct. 6, as the homestanding Fort Frye Lady Cadets prevailed in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-18 at Fort Frye High School.

Marshall had a team-high 15 service points, five aces, four kills, and 13 digs, while Jones netted seven points, four aces, and 15 digs to pace the visiting Lady Pilots. Wade and Marshall each had six service points, while teaming with five aces and 15 digs.

In addition, Turner netted five points, one ace, two digs, and made a game-high 23 assists, while Williams contributed five points, four aces, three digs, eight kills, and blocked three shots. Caretti, Young, and Cieszeski teamed with 14 kills and seven blocks.

Magnolia-Linsly

Magnolia used potent serves and outstanding team play to power them to a 25-7, 25-11, and 25-13 victory over the Linsly School, Oct. 8 in Wheeling.

Moore had 10 service aces to go with her 17 service points, while Chapman and Feldmeier combined for seven aces and 22 points to lead the charge. In addition, Standiford plated three perfect serves, while Cline, Erinn Clegg, and Emily Clegg teamed for 20 points.

Valley-Trinity

Morgantown Trinity stopped the Lady ‘Jills, 25-17 and 25-18 in girls volleyball action, Oct. 8 in Pine Grove on Spike Out Cancer Night.

Jessica Ashcraft played like a girl possessed, scoring 10 points, serving two aces, making 27 assists, and six digs, while bomb-barding one kill and pumping up six digs to lead the Lumberjill charge. Ali Haught and Brittany Sivert teamed for 14 points, seven spikes, 11 digs, and 11 dinks, while Brittany Haught, Justine Miller, and Erin Brown combined for 12-points, five spikes, 14 digs, and Brown added a service ace.

Valley-Hundred

The Lady Lumberjills turned things around over a much-improved Hundred volleyball team, winning 19-25 and 13-25. Ashcraft was on her game as well, scoring 13 points, including five service aces, while making 24 sets, three dinks, and one dig. Brittany Haught and Sarah Bassett each scored 10 points, while knocking down four aces. Bassett, also made four blocks, while Sivert and Miller teamed for 11 points and blasted 10 spikes.

For the Lady Hornets, Emily Ebert and Andreya Nagy rocked the Valley gymnasium with eight service points each, while making outstanding saves and digs everywhere on the court. In addition, Meliah Umstead responded with five points, while Paige Shriver and Josie Phillips each netted four points and Shelly Cork added three points.

Trinity stopped the Hornets in two straight sets, but results were not provided.
