As time expired in Caldwell Sept. 21, River Pilot Colton Wright split the uprights to claim a 24-21 come-from-behind victory over the Redskins. It was Wright's second career game-winning field goal.
After losing back-to-back games, the Pilots would need a solid effort from his gridders to move to 3-2 on the season.
After a scoreless opening period, Caldwell cashed in on a two-yard TD run and a 25 yard TD scamper to take a 14-0 lead.
But, the Pilots' Nick Asturi took a Redskin kickoff to the house from 85 yards out to get the Pilots kick-started.
In the second half, Caldwell would build its advantage to 14 points after scoring an 81 yard touchdown run. But, the Redskin lead was shortened by a 77-yard Cody "Golden Arm" Caldwell TD pass to Asturi, pulling River to within seven points heading into the fourth period.
The Pilots tipped the scales with another touchdown from Asturi, this time from three yards out, to knot the game at 21-21 and setting the stage for Wright's game-winning field goal.
Caldwell completed 8-18 passes for 147 yards and one touchdown to lead the Pilots, while Jordan Sapp paced the ground attack with 65 yards rushing. Asturi scored all three Pilot touchdowns, one by air and two via the ground game. He rushed for 34 yards and hauled in three passes for 89 yards.
In addition, Kameron Brown accounted for 15 yards on two carriers, while grabbing four passes and 51 yards. Bryce Cross netted seven yards on his only reception.
Defensively, Asturi, Brown and Jonathan Stewart each recorded six solo tackles, including one for loss of yardage. Asturi also assisted in five tackles, while Brown and Stewart each assisted with eight stops. Brandon Reusser dropped five Redskin ball carriers, while making the only Pilot sack.
The Pilots will travel to Zanesville Saturday, and will host the Bridgeport Bulldogs Oct. 5 at Magnolia High School's Alumni Field. Both games start at 7 p.m.
