Lumberjill Volleyball Returns Six Seniors

August 22, 2012
Wetzel Chronicle

There isn't an "Under Construction" sign outside the Valley High School Gymnasium these days, although there probably could be one.

With a fresh bunch of new faces aboard with a new attitude, and newly hired Varsity Volleyball Coach Velisha Shepherd, it may be the turning point for the Lumberjills.

After losing Kaitlyn Midcap, Heather Quinn, and Brooke Staley to graduation last year, this team will be a work in progress for a little while.

The 2012 Valley High School Lumberjill Volleyball Team is pictured, in no particular order: Jessica Ashcraft, Ali Haught, Brittany Sivert, Hannah Loy, Brittany Haught, Justine Miller, Summer Briggs, Whitney Haught, Sammi Roberts, Sarah Bassett, Megan Cain, Samantha Moore, Bre Harris, Erin Brown, Maggie Hornbeck, Cassidy Price, Claire Pittman, and Head Coach Velisha Shepherd. Not pictured is player Bailea Underwood.

"I'm learning about the girls and they are learning about me," said Shepherd. "There is an adjustment period, but I'm very pleased with how things are going so far."

With a middle school volleyball team now in place, Shepherd can get the show going early and build from six girls with some experience who can help right away, rather than having to start fresh.

Shepherd thinks the potential is there to enjoy some success this season, but it's not going to happen over night. "However, if we do things right and build from top to bottom, we'll be fine," she added.

Playing key leadership roles this season are seniors Jessica Ashcraft, Ali Haught, Brittany Sivert, Hannah Loy, Brittany Haught, and Justine Miller.

Ashcraft is the team's setter, while Ali Haught is targeted to be a middle hitter. Loy will be a middle hitter, also, while Sivert, Miller, and Brittany Haught will each be outside hitters. Sivert and Miller each play the back line and will give the Lady 'Jills a pair of reliable players to handle those nasty spikes that come back from time to time.

The rest of the squad consists of juniors Summer Briggs and Whitney Haught; sophomores Sammi Roberts, Sarah Bassett, Megan Cain, and Samantha Moore; and freshmen Bre Harris, Erin Brown, Maggie Hornbeck, Cassidy Price, Claire Pittman, and Bailea Underwood.

The Lumberjills will open their season on the road Thursday, Aug. 30, when they travel to Paden City for a tri-match with the Bellaire St. John and the Lady Wildcats beginning at 6:30 p.m.
