By Staff | Aug 15, 2012

The Wetzel Chronicle received five awards in the 2012 West Virginia Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

The results of the annual competition, which honors excellence in newspaper journalism, were announced Saturday during a banquet at Stonewall Resort. Newspapers across the state compete in four circulation groups, two each for daily and weekly newspapers. The Wetzel Chronicle is in Division III, for weekly newspapers with a circulation of 4,000 and over.

The Wetzel Chronicle received second place awards for best sports page or pages, Sports Writer Bruce Crawford; best sports photography, Crawford; and best editorial page, Editor Amy Witschey. Two third place awards were given to the Chronicle: best single editorial, former Staff Writer Miranda Stokes, and best photo essay, Amy Witschey.

The contest has 28 categories, ranging from Coverage of Government Affairs to Best Sports Feature Writing and Best Editorial Page. In 2012, 32 newspapers entered 1,796 entries.

“Community journalism remains the centerpiece of the newspaper industry in West Virginia. The West Virginia Press Association is proud to recognize and honor these outstanding journalists and newspapers,” said Don Smith, executive director of the West Virginia Press Association.
