Board Of Education Approves Routine Matters

Several routine matters met the board's approval Monday night at their regular meeting, including student transfers to Wetzel County Schools, releases from Wetzel County Schools, new programs, and permissions for fund raisers.

As for releases from Wetzel County Schools, Craig and Amy Fluharty were given permission for their children, Amber, Danielle, and Ryan Fluharty, to be released from Wetzel County Schools (Long Drain School and Hundred High School), to continue attending Marion County Schools for the 2012-2013 school year.

Bob and Denise Kehrer were given permission for their child, Chelsea Kehrer, to be released from Wetzel County Schools (Magnolia High School) to continue attending Tyler County Schools for the 2012-2013 school year.

Jennifer Lantz was given permission for her child, Nathan Lantz, to be released from Wetzel County Schools (Paden City High School) to continue attending Tyler County Schools for the 2012-2013 school year.

Tom and Nina Butterfield were given permission for their child, Adrienne Nicole Butterfield, to attend Wetzel County Schools (Paden City High School) for the 2012-2013 school year.

Jeremy and Jamie Byers were given permission for their children, Brayden Byers and Ashlynn Filliez, to continue attending Wetzel County Schools (WCCCF and Paden City High School) for the 2012-2013 school year, pending release from Tyler County Schools.

Jonay Corley was given permission for her child, Gavin Hunter Corley, to attend Wetzel County Schools (Paden City High School) for the 2012-2013 school year, pending release from Tyler County Schools.

James Efaw was also given permission for his child, Isaac Efaw, to continue attending Wetzel County Schools (Hundred High School) for the upcoming school year, pending release from Marion County Schools.

Finally, Heather Johnson was given permission for her child, Garrett C. Johnson, to attend Wetzel County Schools (Paden City Elementary) for the 2012-2013 school year, pending release from Tyler County Schools.

In another matter, Rebecca Voight, parent of home-schooled student, Careva May Voight (12th grade), was given permission to participate in the Health Occupations Class (her second year), offered through Magnolia HIgh School (Mid-Ohio Valley Technical Institute) for the 2012-2013 school year.

Also, Cindy D. Aliff, parent of home-schooled student, Marley Aliff (second grade), was given permission to continue participating in the Accelerated Reading Program at New Martinsville School for the 2012-2013 school year.

The board also approved participation in the Title II of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001: Improving Teacher Quality for the 2012-2013 school year in the amount of $207,878.

Also, the board approved of participation in the West Virginia Board of Education Alternative Education Program for Disruptive Students for the 2012-2013 school year in the amount of $50,385.

The following groups and organizations were approved to raise funds (monies) in the name of a particular school in Wetzel County:

Long Drain School: LDS, Long Drain PTA, LDS Athletics

New Martinsville School: NMS Football Boosters

Paden City Elementary School: PCES PTA, PCES Boosters, PCES Choir, PCES Art, PCES Chess Club, PCES Library, PCES Relay for Life, PCES Leukemia/Lymphoma, Wheelchair Mission, St. Jude Math-A-Thon

Paden City High School: PCHS Football, PCHS Girls' Basketball, PCHS Boys' Basketball, PCHS Cheerleaders, PCHS Cross Country, PCHS Baseball, PCHS Softball, PCHS Track, PCHS Golf, PCHS Volleyball, PCHS Band Boosters, PCHS Art, PCHS Travel Group, PCHS Senior Field Trip, PCHS Spanish Club, Paden City 8th Grade Field Trip, Paden City 7/8 Football, Paden City 7/8 Girls' Basketball, Paden City 7/8 Boys' Basketball, Paden City 7/8 Cheerleaders

Short Line School: SLS Annual Fundraiser (Magazines), SLS PTA, SLS Athletic Boosters, SLS Art Club, SLS Choir

Valley High School: VHS Band Boosters

The following meeting dates with the Local School Improvement Councils for the 2012-2013 school year were approved:

Sept. 17, Hundred High School/Long Drain School

Oct. 1, Paden City HIgh School/Paden City Elementary School

Oct. 15, Valley High School/Short Line School

Nov. 5, Magnolia HIgh School/New Martinsville School

(Meetings will be held at the high school in each attendance area.)

In another matter, a request by Steven W. Jones, band director of PCHS, was granted. Jones requested a bus and bus operator to transport the PCHS Band to Martins Ferry, Ohio, on Oct. 20 to perform at the OVAC Showcase of Bands. This will be funded through the Paden City Band Patrons.

Approval was also given to the New Martinsville School Football Boosters to form the New Martinsville School Sports Complex Committee. The committee will raise money through grants, fund raising, and donations to build a sports complex behind New Martinsville School.

The second reading of Wetzel County Policy JEAA: Compulsory School Attendance by Todd Barcus, was also approved.
