Jeremy Shepherd, MS, ATC, PES, along with partners Mountain River Physical Therapy and Prodigy Wellness Center of New Martinsville will hold an informational concussion presentation Thursday, July 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at West Virginia Northern Community College in New Martinsville.
This session will feature the latest research on the biomechanics of concussions, testing methods, keys to making safe return-to-play decisions, and the long-term effects of sports-related brain injuries.
Parents, athletes of all ages, coaches, school administrators, as well as other health care professionals are encouraged to attend. The goal is to teach everyone ways to lower concussion risks, recognize a concussion, and take the proper response when an athlete is thought to have a concussion.
In 2011, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of sports or recreation-related visits to emergency rooms for concussions or other traumatic brain injuries increased from 153,375 annually to 248,418 annually from 2001 to 2009, a 62 percent jump.
