Storm Causes Damage, Takes Out Power

Downtown New Martinsville Power Should Be Back On By Mid-Afternoon Today

July 2, 2012
Wetzel Chronicle

Reports are showing that the main feed of power from Mon Power into New Martinsville's electric system has been repaired and is awaiting inspection before restoring electric to the downtown area of New Martinsville. It is expected to be restored by mid-afternoon today, Monday, July 2.

Electric service was restored to the Steelton area of New Martinsville and Paden City Sunday. Of course there are still isolated outages in those areas thanks to downed lines after Friday evening's powerful storm. In the outlying areas of the county, outages are the norm but we are still working to gather more detailed information.

The Wetzel Chronicle is working hard to put out an informative issue tomorrow that will give further information and photographs. Since our office has also been without power since Friday evening, our operations had to be moved to Wheeling, obviously making the news gathering, reporting, and production more difficult. Please bear with us as we work, doing our best to put out the best edition possible during these difficult times.

Mon Power, Potomac Edison, West Penn Power, Ohio Edison and other FirstEnergy utilities, assisted by crews from outside contractors and utilities, continue their around-the-clock efforts to restore service to utility customers following Friday night's severe thunderstorm that left 566,000 customers without power in West Virginia, Maryland, western Pennsylvania and central Ohio. A large numbers of fallen trees and other debris the result of winds gusting over 65 mph in some areas have complicated restoration efforts.

As of 1:30 p.m. Sunday, FirstEnergy utilities had restored service to more than 314,000 of the more than 566,000 customers affected by the damaging storm.
