Board Works To Fill All Positions For 2012-2013

June 20, 2012
BY LAUREN RIGGS - Staff Writer (reporter@wetzelchronicle.com) , Wetzel Chronicle

Wetzel County Superintendent of School Diane Watt reported at the June 4 board meeting that work was being done feverishly to fill all positions that have been vacated.

She made specific mention to her recommendations regarding the full-time WVEIS - West Virginia Education Information System position, as well as a federal position that is being funded 50 percent through federal money. President Mike Blair said that he had "no qualms" regarding Watt's recommendations, and Board of Education member Linda Ritz stated she felt Watt's recommendations were the best way to go. It appears as if Todd Barcus, attendance director/student support services coordinator, will be consuming most of the WVEIS duties, though there will be a WVEIS coordinator as well, an extension of the position. President Blair stated that he felt the WVEIS job needs to get "contagious" if it can, that the more involved with it, the merrier.

Vice President Patterson asked Barcus if these new duties would affect Barcus' efficiency with his attendance director duties.

Watt spoke in Barcus' favor, stating the WVEIS requirements have not stopped him from going above the necessary actions for his attendance duties. She said to Barcus, "You've been doing a lot of investigating, talking to other counties about alternative education programs." Watt stated that they were actually looking into a "school-within-a-school" route.

Patterson stated that the alternative education students shouldn't be rewarded back in school, whereas Blair stated that he didn't like the thought of the students being off all day long.

Barcus spoke that he had found two schools with facilities that would isolate students, and Watt stated there could even possibly be one location.

On the night's agenda was also a presentation on home schooling eligibility by Barcus. Barcus stated that there had been questions about extracurricular and co-curricular activities for home-school students. Barcus stated that to participate in extracurricular activities, home-schooled students are required to take four classes/subjects with full credit. Exceptions are vocational courses or block scheduling. Barcus said that these issues arose because of a few questions from students who many want to be homeschooled.

In other matter, the following retirements, resignations, and employment changes were approved the June 4 meeting of the Wetzel County Board of Education.
