Hundred’s Pool To Open

June 13, 2012

Hundred's pool is expected to open next week.

A labor of love by the Hundred Swimming Pool Volunteers so the town can have a public swimming pool, the feature never opens as early as other area municipal pools. But the fact that a town of Hundred's size can even support such an expensive endeavor is noteworthy.

As an added bonus, admission is free on the pool's first day of operation, tentatively Monday, June 18. Hours of operation are expected to be noon to 5 p.m., daily. After that first day, then of course there is an admission charge, but the volunteers have yet to set the prices. They also sell season passes for individuals and families. It is also available for rental for private parties. Just inquire about all of those possibilities at the pool located near the city park and Hundred High School football/baseball field. Before the pool could be opened the walls of the pool needed to be patched in several places. But it's all fixed and repainted now. In fact, the water is in place, awaiting opening day.

Before the Hundred Pool could open, as is expected Monday, several repairs needed to be made to the pool's walls.

Undoubtedly some fun at the pool will be part of the Independence Day festivities for many in Hundred on July 7.

While the annual event will likely be scaled down some this year, there will definitely still be a parade, car show, pageant, and fireworks. Carroll Cumberledge attended the May 21 council meeting and asked if he could hold a parade that day like usual.

"I don't want to cause any fuss or anything. I just think a parade is an easy thing to have." said Cumberledge. Plus, he has already advertised the car show that follows on the east end of the football field.

"If we can get the parade going, I'll work with you," said Councilman Charles Himelrick who has shown some interest in the event since it was first brought up several months ago. However, he said the city held two special meetings to organize the Independence Day celebration and only three councilpersons showed up for them.

To be part of the parade, the men said entries simply need to show up at Hundred High School on July 7 at 9:30 a.m. to prepare for the 10 a.m. parade. For any more information call Himelrick at 304-775-2191 or Cumberledge at 304-775-2471.
