Valley High School's journey through the baseball sectional/regional waters began May 7 with a 13-3 victory over Paden City, but ended May 11 with a 17-3 loss to the Cameron Dragons. In between, there was a first loss to Cameron, 12-2.
Valley 2, Cameron 12
In the second game May 10, Valley took an early lead over Cameron with two runs in the first frame. But, the Dragons then scored 12 unanswered runs and went on to defeat the Jacks 12-2.
Valley 7, Paden City 6
In an earlier elimination game May 11at Cameron, the 'Jacks scored two runs in the home half of the seventh to defeat the Paden City Wildcats 7-6
The 'Cats got three runs in the top half of the first inning. The home half was highlighted by a two-run homer by Brandon Stoneking. But, that was all the damage the 'Jacks did and the Wildcats had a 3-2 lead after one.
Valley held the Cats in check in the top half of the second, while in the home half of the second, the 'Jacks scored three runs of to go up 5-3 after two.
The score stayed like that until the Cats scored twice in the top of the fifth and tied the game up at 5-5. The Jacks were held in check in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Paden City pushed across another run and held a 6-5 led. The Jacks were held in check in the bottom of the sixth, as were the Cats in the top of the seventh.
Down to their final three outs, the Lumberjacks got a base on balls by freshman Pete Shaw to start the inning . Tyler Hayes then reached on an error. Shaw came around to score on a Peyton Palmer double.
Hayes scored the game winning run when Chase West singled and the 'Jacks earned a 7-6 come-from-behind victory.
Hitting for the Jacks: Brandon Stoneking, who belted a two run homer and drove in two; Peyton Palmer, who doubled twice and plated himself twice. Drew Wade and Chase West both singled twice. West also got two RBI while Wade had one RBI; Tristen Kocher doubled and had an RBI.
For the Cats: Jared Stewart doubled and tripled and brought home a teammate. Craig Allen singled and got an RBI, while Levi Meadows smacked two singles and one RBI. Matt Barker singled twice and Trey Leonard, Zach Heasley, and Kyle Postlethwait all had a single.
Taking the loss from the mound for the Cats was Postlethwait, striking out seven and walking four. Hayes got the win for the Jacks.
Valley 3, Cameron 17
The Valley Lumberjacks were held to just two hits and three runs in the championship game of the Region I Section II tournament and fell victim to the Cameron Dragons 17-3 on May 11 at Cameron.
The Jacks' Hunter Ring and Stoneking both worked walks with one out in the top of the first and both came around to score on a West fielder's choice with two outs. Tyler Hayes struck out to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Valley struck again as Kocher walked. Two batters later, Brock Stackpole singled and Hunter Lamenters and Wade both walked to load the basses with two outs. The Wade walk scored Kocher from third, but Ring would strike out to end the inning and the game, 17-3, in five innings.
Stackpole and Stoneking both singled for the 'Jacks, but that was all their hitting. They did draw seven walks in the game. The 'Jacks finished the season with a 12-15 record. n
