Lady Eagles Continue Winning, En Route To OVAC

In a matchup of the top two teams in OVAC Class 3-A, the Magnolia Lady Blue Eagles showed why they have been number one in the OVAC all year when they took down second-ranked Fort Frye in a double -hitter April 20, 4-0 and 9-1

In game one, sophomore Mallory Chapman homered and doubled twice while senior Tori Tharp singled, doubled, and drove in a pair of runs. She also went the distance on the mound, striking out seven and allowing only three hits.

The Cadets went down in order in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, Chapman singled with two outs and came around to score on a Tharp single. Tharp was stranded as Abby Durig struck out to end the inning.

The lead-off hitter for the Cadets reached on an error to start the top of the second. Tharp then recorded two straight strikeouts and the next batter popped out to Dallas Mullet at shortstop to end the inning. In the bottom of the second, Jordan Babe led off with a single and advanced to second on an error by the Lady Cadet right fielder. Babe then scored when senior Cassidi Wells reached on an error with two outs. Marissa Bosley grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning with the Big Blue up 2-0.

Fort Frye again went down in order in the top of the third. With one out in the bottom of the third, Chapman smacked a 2-2 pitch over the right centerfield fence for her second homerun of the season, putting the Big Blue ahead 3-0. Tharp flew out to right field for the second out of the inning and Durig struck out to end the inning.

The Fort got a lead-off walk to start the top of the fourth, After a strikeout, the lead-off batter was put out going to second when Durig fired the ball to Mullet, who was covering second. Tharp then recorded another strikeout to end the inning.

In the home half of the fourth, the Eagles went down in order.

The Cadets got two straight singles with one out to start the fifth frame and a Tharp K made the second one. Fort got another single to load the bases. However, the inning ended when the last batter up flew out to Chapman at first,

In the home half of the fifth, three Lady Eagles in a row struck out for a short inning. The Fort's lead-off batter reached on an error to start the top of the sixth, but the next three batters got out to end the inning. With Magnolia now up, Chapman smacked a double and then scored when Tharp smacked her own double. Durig then singled to put runners at first and second. After a Babe strikeout, Mackenzie Dawson grounded out to second, advancing base runners to second and third. Meghan Miller then struck out to retire the side after fouling off numerous pitches. The Cadets went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Hitting for Magnolia were: Chapman, with a home run and two doubles; Tharp, who singled and doubled and brought home two teammates; Durig and Babe both singled to end the offense. All told, the Eagles scored four runs on seven hits and no errors, while the Cadets scored no runs on three hits and one error.

Magnolia 9, Fort Frye 1

In a run-ahead rule shortened game number two, Marissa Bosley led off the bottom of the first with a solo homerun and sparked an eight-run first inning from the Lady Eagles. Miller collected two singles and two RBIs in the game, as she and Bosley paced a balanced Magnolia attack, who would finish with 12 hits.

The Eagles then scored one run in the second and were held scoreless the rest of the way. The Cadets scored a single run in the top of the fifth to end the scoring and give the Eagles a convincing 9-1 victory.

Hitting for the Eagles in game two were: Bosley, with a homer; Miller with two singles and two RBI; Dallas Mullet, who doubled, tripled and tacked on an RBI; Durig, with two singles and an RBI; and senior Gauri Patel with a double. The Eagles, in an error-free effort, scored nine runs on 12 hits, while the Cadets, also errorless, scored one run on two hits.

Magnolia 10, Weir 0

Senior Jordan Babe collected three hits and three RBI as she helped her team down the Weir Lady Red Riders 10-0 on April 19 at Hydro Fielded. Also contributing hits for the Eagles were: Durig, a single and a double; Bosley, who singled twice and had two RBIs; and Dallas Mullet, with a single, a double, and two RBIs. Chapman tossed a complete game, striking out nine and allowing just two singles.

Magnolia 2, St. John 3

In a mirror image of their game at New Martinsville on April 13, Bellaire St. John turned over the Lady Eagles 3-2 April 18 in a game that went the same distance and produced the same scores as the teams produced in the New Martinsville contest.

After a scoreless first inning, the Blue put a run on the board in the top of the second. The Irish tied the game up in the bottom of the third 1-1, but the Lady Eagles scored in the top of the sixth to go up 2-1. The Irish were down to their final three outs of the game when they scratched out another run to tie the game up at 2-2 and force extra inning. But the Irish scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to make the Fat Lady sing.

Hitting for the Eagles were Bosley, with two singles and an RBI, while Babe had a single, a double, and drove in a teammate.

The top seed Lady Blue Eagles will take on the fourth seed Shenandoah Lady Zeps in an OVAC class 3-A semifinal game today at 6:45 p.m. on field four at Wheeling's I-470 fields. The winner will advance to the championship contest on Saturday, April 28.
