The Paden City Foundation is announcing the date for this year's Foundation 5K Race (run/walk) for June 2 at 9 a.m. The race, in its second year, will have both run and walk divisions and wheelchair racers are also encouraged to enter. The start/finish line will be at Centennial Park at Third Avenue and Main Street in Paden City. Race-day registration will begin at 8 a.m., but organizers encourage pre-registration. The entry fee is $10 and includes a race t-shirt. The course is relatively flat and is designed for all experience levels of running, race-walking, and recreational walking. Awards will be given to the top finishers in both the run and walk categories (male and female divisions) and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division for both walk and run (male and female). Age groups are birth to nine years, 10-19 years, 20-29 years, 30-39 years, 40-49 years, 50-59 years, 60-69 years, and 70 and over years of age.
Current sponsors on board for the race include WesBanco, Healthy Alliance, RAM Financial Services, Litman Excavating, and TME-Lights Your Way. Those interested in helping sponsor the race can contact Rodney McWilliams at 304-482-9684 for more details.
In its inaugural year, the Foundation 5K saw 100 entrants in both run and walk categories and male and female divisions. Entrants came from Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel, Tyler, Pleasants, Doddridge, Ritchie, Monongalia, and Wood counties in West Virginia as well as Marietta, Jackson, and Columbus, Ohio. Proceeds from the race will benefit three projects of the Paden City Foundation: the Scholarship Fund, the Paden City Museum, and the Cornerstone Project Committee.
Racers are ready to cross the start line in last year’s Paden City Foundation 5K Race. This year’s run/walk will be held June 2 at 9 a.m.
The Foundation 5K is again partnering with another area 5K race, the Jim Quinet 5K Memorial Race in New Martinsville, to form the Ohio River Racing series. The idea for the series came about when race directors Rodney McWilliams and Matt Quinet wanted to find a way to encourage more people to participate in a healthy hobby like running/walking and also bring more folks to the area for competitive and recreational events. The top three overall winners in the run and walk categories (male and female division) will receive series points from each race. At the conclusion of the Quinet race in July, Series champions will be awarded. In order to receive Series awards, contestants must enter both races. McWilliams commented, "We want to encourage participation in both races and this way, people who normally run in the Jim Quinet 5K will want to enter the Foundation 5K and folks that enter the race in Paden City in June will want to come back to run in New Martinsville in July. It is a good way the two communities and organizations can work together to promote a healthy lifestyle." The Jim Quinet 5K Memorial Race is scheduled for July 28.
In 2011, the Foundation 5K used its proceeds to help fund operations at the Paden City Museum, fund the Cornerstone Projects and add funding to the Craig W. Broadwater Memorial Scholarship fund. That fund awarded a $500 scholarship to a graduate of PCHS in 2011. This year's scholarship fund chosen to receive proceeds will be the Owen and Hope Memorial Scholarship fund. McWilliams added, "We want to make sure all the scholarships that are awarded through the Paden City Foundation remain viable and can award adequate dollars that will help our high school graduates get a start in college. Mack McKay was an honored educator and civic leader in Paden City decades. He initially established the scholarship in his late wife's name to honor and, when he passed, the fund name was changed to honor his service to this community, the school and the children and students of Paden City."
Information about the race, including registration forms will be available at rivercityrunners.com and registration forms will be available at the Paden City Museum, WesBanco-Paden City, Paden City Public Library, or phoning McWilliams at 304-482-9684.
