Not Quite Understanding

By Staff | Mar 21, 2012

We must say we aren’t thrilled with the prospect of local high school students attending West Liberty University at The Highlands -a possibility presented at Monday’s Wetzel County Board of Education meeting.

First, our community has a proud tradition of attracting and supporting West Virginia Northern Community College. Sure, they may not offer as many or varied courses as WLU, but they certainly offer enough to keep a high school senior busy. Also, while we haven’t researched their tuitions, we can only assume WVNCC has a lower price tag.

Also, the idea of sending one or more high school students regularly on a 45-minute drive one direction to attend classes just doesn’t make much sense — particularly when we have WVNCC in our midst.

We hope the board, and parents if the the option is provided through a Memorandum of Understanding, will think long and hard about utilizing WLU instead of our own community college.
