Wetzel Chronicle

Over $60,000 was raised at the 44th annual Wetzel County 4-H FFA Ham and Bacon Sale held Friday evening.

The student's hams, bacons, and eggs were auctioned for $58,971.88, setting a new sale record. The sale included the scholarship ham and bacon, FFA Carhartt jackets, and many products donated back for resale to the Paul Henderson Memorial Scholarship Fund, totaling $8,137. The final total for all goods sold was $61,108.88.

As usual, the exhibits judged to be the grand and reserve champions brought much more than the average. The grand champion ham by Cheyenne Coen went for $5,687.50 to Grenadier Energy Partners and Drilling Appalachian Corporation (DAC). The reserve grand champion ham exhibited by Casandra Henderson sold for $3,440 to AAA Homes of New Martinsville.

Rachel Wyatt's grand champion bacon went to high bidder Wetzel County Commissioner and Assessor Candidate Scott Lemley for $1,550. The reserve grand champion bacon from Katherine Henderson was sold to Chesapeake Energy, also for $1,550.

Chesapeake Energy purchased Casandra Henderson's grand champion eggs for $1,000. The reserve champion eggs from Melanie Thomas went to Wetzel County Commissioner and Assessor Candidate Scott Lemley for $675.

The scholarship ham donated by Henderson Farm and shown by Katherine Henderson was purchased by the Wileyville Volunteer Fire Department for $2,250. Drilling Appalachian Corporation (DAC) and Grenadier Energy Partners purchased the scholarship bacon donated by Henderson Farm and shown by Katherine Henderson for $1,000.

Also, Morris Trucking and Excavating of Reader purchased the scholarship FFA Carhartt jacket for $1,100. Since the winning bid was at least $1,000, a second jacket was offered to the runner-up bidder for the same price. Wetzel County Commissioner Candidate Allen Rush agreed to buy the second jacket for $1,100 and donated it to the 4-H and Livestock Club to be raffled off this summer.

During the show this year's scholarship winners were recognized. They are Brittany Greathouse, Mitch Moore, and Brittany Watson, all of Hundred High School; and Dani Hayes, Annaliese Henderson, Holli Schell, Clay Ueltschy, and Rachel Wyatt of Valley High School.
