O’Neil Claims 23rd Weekly Match Play Championship

March 14, 2012
Wetzel Chronicle

Ron O'Neil Jr. won his 23rd career weekly match play championship and his first this year with a 215-207 verdict over Steve Nixon Sr. The victory broke a tie with Bill DeVault for the second place in the most weekly match play victories behind only Doug Tuskey's 38. O'Neil won $75, compliments of weekly sponsor LaRoche Tree Services.

O'Neil and Sean Sawyers tied for the two game high qualifier with a 480 total.

O'Neil eliminated Joe Sherer 241-215 in one semifinal, while Nixon ousted John Leek 215-196 in the other semifinal.

Miller Lite and Buddy Light Accounting, tournament sponsors, guarantee the grand finale top prize of $1,000. The top 24 bowlers on the point list qualify for the 34th annual match play final, with the top eight bowlers each earning a first round bye.

Chet Richmond continues to lead the point list lead with 700 points, while Chuckie Fisherkeller is second with 655 points. Sean Johnson is in third place with 570 points, while Lil Miller, (500) and Dave Johnson (495) round out the top five.
