The Magnolia High School Wrestling Team made the most of its limited numbers at the Region One Class-A/AA tournament at Tyler Consolidated Feb. 18.
The Blue Eagles only filled seven weight classes for the tournament, with two of them qualifying for the state tournament in Huntington and three others only one win from making the trip.
Jared Wright had a memorable tournament, winning his first two matches by pinning Michael Gaunt of Weir and Brad Riddle of Ritchie County. He fell a little short in the 182-pound weight division against St Marys' Cole Wright with a 10-7 decision. Wright finished the tournament with a 23-7 record, while White finished 30-3.
Wright matched up against 29-21 John Given from Braxton County in the opening round in the state wrestling tournament last week in Huntington.
Also earning a trip to the state tournament was Gage Deem in the 152-pound weight division. Deem beat Devon Jones from Ritchie County by a fall then lost to Tyler Schwertfeger from Cameron. He then defeated Hunter LeMaters of Tyler Consolidated to qualify for the state tournament.
Deem then fell to Shayne Hinkle of Clay-Battelle for third place and ended the regional with a 19-9 record. He faced a tough Phillip Nuzum from Phillip Barbour, who had an impressive 45-6 record.
Tyler Baker, at 285 pounds, finished in fifth place to win his first match over Joe Mercer from Oak Glen. He then lost to Alex Rauch of Williamstown and to Seth Smith from Ritchie County before destroying Hunter Six from Clay-Battelle in 1:35 of the first period.
Joey Kelly, at 138 pounds, lost his first two matches to Tim Barnes of Weir, and Hunter Yoders from Cameron before earning an 8-2 decision over Tim Barnes of Weir for fifth place,
Also coming in with a fifth place finish was the Eagles' Harley Price. He lost his opener to Mark Freeland and went on to defeat Will Hogan 8-4 in his second bout. He would then lose to Andrew Cunningham from Bishop Donahue before finishing the tournament with a 12-7 decision over Trace Hart from Williamstown High School.
Also competing in the regionals was Garrett Woofter in the the 160- pound weight division. He won his opener to Mario Mantecon of Tyler Consolidated by a fall, but then finished the night with a pair of losses to Austin Warinsky of Cameron and Kyle Bartlett from Ritchie County.
Jacob Rabel, in the 170 pound weight division, lost his only two matches to Josh Hart of Ritchie by a fall and to Cody Smith of Williamstown by a close 7-6 decision.
In Huntington, Deem lost to Nuzum in his opener, while Wright pinned Given in his opener.
Deem would then fall to Sam Wood from Independence in his first round of the consolation, while Wright fell to Trey Fitzwater of Liberty Raleigh. Wright went on to defeat Max Redman from Keyser by a 13-3 major decision, but ended the state tournament losing to Brad Riddle in overtime.
