The Hundred Lady Hornets - up 10-6 on a slow start in period one - extended their lead in the second and third frames and held on to beat the Valley Lumberjills, 56-40 in the opener of the Section One Region sectional play inside the Hornets Nest Feb. 17.
After losing its last meeting to Valley, the Lady Hornets pulled away when Shayna Tedrow went baseline and dropped it off to Katie Tennant, who landed the first of many baskets in a 28-point game to bring home the sectional victory.
"I challenged the seniors to get this win," said Head Coach Jeremy Kelch. "because it would be their last home game, and was against their biggest rival, and they did."
Besides her 28 points, Tennant pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Mercedes Goff nailed 11 points and Cheyenne Myers added seven more points. She also had a game-high 14 rebounds. In addition, Tedrow tallied a deuce, hauled in 14 rebounds, 12 assists and blocked three 'Jill shots. Emily Ebert recorded a free throw and grabbed eight boards.
For the Lumberjills, Holli Schell, Megan Bucher and Dani Hayes each netted 11 points, while Brittany Sivert added six markers and Alisha Carter swished a charity toss.
The Lumberjills will lose seniors Hayes, Schell and Annaliese Henderson to graduation. However, most of the team will be back next year, including Bucher, Sivert, Carter, Samantha Thomas, Jessica Ashcraft, Ali Haught, and Karissa Headley.
