Mountaineers Value Freedom

By Staff | Jun 2, 2010

We’re proud to live in a place where honoring those who served or are serving in the military is important. West Virginia historically has the highest per capita participation in our nation’s armed services. There are many theories as to why this is so, but we think it comes from a proud tradition of loving our country and freedom. After all, West Virginia was formed out of that desire. We essentially emancipated ourselves from the southern state of Virginia based on the belief of freedom for all.

So we guess it’s no surprise that Memorial Day is an important holiday here-and not just for cookouts and other leisure pursuits. Small towns throughout West Virginia still hold Memorial Day services and citizens still attend them. . . simply because they want to honor those who fought for their freedom. Thank you for that heritage, for your service, and for organizing these important events of remembrance.
