Bonnie "Schied" Shannon is running unopposed for re-election to the position of city recorder for New Martinsville.
You have been involved in the FEMA buyouts in New Martinsville. Are there any other special projects you have been or plan to be involved in within the city?
Shannon: Our most important project over the years has been to get the Hannibal Hydro Project resolved. In 2004 our contracts with several parties came to an end. Covanta, the operator of Hannibal Hydro Project, withdrew as operator. This was an unexpected event. We negotiated with Allegheny Power and the other parties and end result is we are the owner/operator of the facility. Also during this time period we completed an agreement with Amp-Ohio to sell the Willow Island Hydro License. This gave the city the monies to pay off our "City Hall Building". This has lightened the burden for the city and helps to make us in better financial condition.
We have completed the Whitten Lane Storm Sewer Project with help from our Bel-O-Mar Regional Council to secure grants for the project. Currently I have filed grant applications for a CSO project in the Brooklyn area in the amount of $1,293,000 with the help of the Water and Sewer Department, Phase II of the storm sewer separation in the Long Street/Locust Street area in the amount of $1,722,000 with the help of the Street Department and to extend the walking/bike trail in the downtown area in the amount of $5,000 in connection with the Parks and Recreation Department.
Also I am working on filing an application for a WV Division of Energy grant that we are working on with Bel-O-Mar Regional Council.
We have received many grants over the years due to our great working relationships with our state legislators.
Recently we received monies from the state to help with the cost of putting a new roof on City Hall and we are in line also for monies in reference to the HVAC system.
Elaborate three main reasons you should keep this position.
Shannon: I have always tried to serve the public to the best of my ability. I have an open door policy in my office and will continue this policy in the future. If anyone needs my help all they need to is come to my office or call me. I have the experience of 17 years in city government.
I would like to mention that as an elected official I want to give credit where credit is due. The city employees are what makes all this work. Our employees are the ones out there taking care of the citizens and I do appreciate their efforts.
I do appreciate all of our citizens' support and the opportunity to serve you.
