During a regular bus inspection, six of the 29 Wetzel County school buses failed to meet inspection qualifications. Tagged with red rejection stickers, these buses will be out of service for the next several days. Superintendent Bill Jones stressed this was a routine inspection and the county will be calling the mechanics as soon as possible to get the infractions corrected. The West Virginia state inspector plans to return Monday and reinspect the six rejected buses. In addition to the 29 operating buses, the county has six spare buses. Wetzel County school buses will run their routes with no trouble or outside assistance.

On Tuesday, a surprise inspection was conducted by the West Virginia State School Bus Inspector, only to find numerous buses which were not in compliance with State and Federal codes. Out of the 29 buses, only 11 were inspected, and 7 were rejected. This is a very disturbing amount of rejections for only half the fleet which was inspected from 6:00 a.m. to Noon. The superintendent William Jones stated that they were not trying to borrow buses from Tyler County which is an absolute lie. Furthermore, he stated that student safety was his number one priority, if this was so, he would not have eliminated two out of the four mechanics at the county bus garage, which he said was due to financial reasons. I think if any cuts are needed, it should be within the county board office, and not within the transportation department which involves the safety of our children.
