About 70 people braved the cold and wind to gather in front of the Wetzel County Courthouse Saturday afternoon at the first local "tea party" sponsored by the Wetzel County Conservative Coalition.

The purpose of the event, said an organizer, was to remind politicians that they work for the people and govern only with their approval. The courthouse porch was decorated with the slogan, "Take America Back!"

At one point in the 4 p.m. event a citizen yelled out, "Only one-third of Americans vote, so we get what we deserve."

While it was not to be a campaigning event, the event's podium was graced by two Republican candidates for the Second Congressional District's Representative seat, currently held by Alan Mollohan. Cindy Hall of Wheeling and Tom Stark of Parkersburg spoke on some hot-button topics such as Cap and Trade and the Fair Tax Bill.

Hall said she hopes all citizens will educate themselves on the issues and current events. "Freedom-wise we could lose everything that we're accustomed to here in America," cautioned Hall.

Stark said if politicians would simply follow the constitution and honor the oath of office, most problems would be solved. He further asked, "Where is the urgent rush to change this country?" It has been doing just fine without changes, offered Stark.

Both candidates were questioned by the audience about their stance on abortion. Hall said she was completely pro-life while Stark said he was pro-life with some dire exceptions.

Mike Clark, of New Martinsville, was one of the organizers of the "tea party". He handed out copies of the Bill of Rights, and tea bags also were distributed to those in attendance.

Clark said the event was organized over the last two months by about seven or eight people with the goal of getting Republicans and Democrats together to "take our country back".

NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO DO ANYTHING! Not a single one of your freedoms have changed since President Obama took office and they aren't going to change. No one is FORCING you to purchase government run health care. It's called the public OPTION. If you don't want it, then stick with your privatized insurance company with extremely increasing premiums and pre-existing condition rules. Universal health care should be a RIGHT for every American. And no one is forcing you to hire cross dressers to work at your business, but there is equal opportunity employment in our nation, and even though someone might have different ideals than you, does NOT make you any better than they are.

Every politician in the past, present, and future will always have certain connections with bad people. I wouldn't even try and begin to name those types of people that George Bush was connected with as it would take up a good bit of my time.

I should also add, Brandon, that it seems of late that the liberal side of the many disagreements being aired lately are ALWAYS the ones to play the race card. It is a sign of desparation. No one with whom I am acquainted has any qualms about our President's race. What we have serious concerns about are his attitudes, his associations with radicals and criminals, and his published statements of contempt for our Constitution. I truly believe an overwhelming majority of "these people" share that feeling. You and your fellow liberals use race as one of many tools to divide and conquer when rational arguments for your ideas have been found lacking.

The far-right conservatives are the ones who are ruining this country.

Fortunately, Brandon, those of us who care about freedom have been vocal enough to slow down or stop many of the really harmful things before they got through. Freedom is not about being put in gulags. That is the extreme. It's about being free to sell your home without getting government approval of its energy efficiency level...something that is hidden in the Cap & Trade bill currently in Congress. Freedom is NOT being FORCED to purchase health insurance. Freedom is NOT being forced to hire a cross-dresser to work in my private business because I find the activity distasteful. Note I stated the activity or action is distasteful, not the person doing it. Freedom is simply keeping our government within the limits described by our Constitution (as it was originally intended). If you draw a line across a paper with TYRANNY at one end and ANARCHY at the other, the Constitution is the mid-point. We are far to the left of that mid-point and need to return there quickly.

The only thing the majority of these people want is the country back in the hands of a white man. You keep spewing your lies about how your freedom is being taken away from you when absolutely nothing has been done to affect your freedoms.
