We are glad to see the Wetzel County Board of Education join a law suit seeking relief from the unfunded debt of retiree benefits.
Superintendent Bill Jones had it right when he said, "The state legislature created the debt, not the counties."
We are not financial experts and certainly don't understand all of the ins and outs of the situation-after all that is what a judge's job will be-but we think they need to try to fight the huge liability that was transferred to them in 2007 with the votes of our legislators and swipe of the Governor's pen. Oh that we could all get rid of large debt so easily!
For some reason that kind of debt transfer or forgiveness seems to happen primarily to government entities-those that make the rules.
We hope more counties will join the suit and give strength to the argument. Sometimes the rules really aren't correct and need to be reviewed. We trust that the powers that be will give the case a fair chance and render a correct decision.
