We The People

April 8, 2009
Wetzel Chronicle

A friend of mine alerted me to an event that will be happening next Wednesday, April 15. It is called the Ohio Valley Tea Party and it is taking place at 6 p.m. at the Heritage Port in Wheeling.

Basically it is a rally of the common (sense) people in the country at "We the People" gatherings around our great, free country on tax day, April 15, to simply give the common man a voice.

I think most of us have heard about the big government bailouts and economic stimulus packages and wondered why no one ever bailed us out. Why do we still have to pay our mortgages? Where is the help for the small business man on Main Street?

I won't even begin to pretend that I fully understand all of the financial wranglings that have been going on in this country. Quite frankly I'm too busy working to pay my bills and taking care of my family to get that deeply into it.

However, I am angry about big bonuses to people in failing companies. I am angry that other people will have their loans forgiven while I keep paying on mine.

So this tea party strikes a chord with me and I am going to try to attend. Will it do any good? Honestly, probably not. But at least I will add my voice and face to the many around this country who want to speak up for the common man.

As I was contemplating this event and situation, I realized that to me it has nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans, or even politicians or big executives. To me it simply has to do with arrogance on the part of a bunch of people who for years have thought they know better than the common man what this country needs. We, the common Americans, vote every day with the choices we make-primarily by where we spend our money and time. We have a vote that we all exercise, but you see it is being drowned out by incentives, bailouts, tax breaks, tariffs, etc.
