CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia voters can begin heading to the polls to cast votes ahead of the May 13 primary election.

Early voting begins Wednesday and runs through May 10. Polls will be open on Saturdays.

Residents can check the early voting hours in their county on the Secretary of State's website at www.wvsos.com .

Officials say early voting has been a popular option for West Virginians since its implementation for the 2002 primary.

In the last six statewide elections, about one in every five votes cast were cast during the early voting period.

New voter registration totals show there are more than 1.2 million registered voters in the state, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans 625,520 to 352,610.

More than 221,700 people registered with no party affiliation.
