BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia fugitive who mailed his electronic monitoring device to his probation officer has been captured in North Carolina.
The U.S. Marshals Service tells media outlets that 51-year-old Michael Cunningham of Camp Creek is awaiting extradition to West Virginia. Cunningham was arrested Sunday night in Rutherford County, N.C.
The marshals service says Cunningham was on home confinement awaiting trial on fraud charges when he took off his electronic monitoring bracelet and disappeared.
Cunningham mailed the monitoring bracelet to his probation officer in September. The federal courthouse in Bluefield was temporarily closed after a worker at the post office in the building heard beeping from the package and an X-ray showed a device inside with wires.
