Ex-worker at W.Va. racetrack appeals conviction

December 13, 2013
Associated Press

CULPEPER, Va. (AP) — A Virginia woman serving a prison term for stealing $1.3 million from a West Virginia racetrack and casino is appealing her conviction.

The Star Exponent of Culpeper (http://bit.ly/JemIjx) reports that Anita Ambler is basing her appeal on ineffective legal representation, claiming her court-appointed attorney called her a liar and stupid, among other allegations.

This summer, Ambler was sentenced in Wheeling, W.Va., for stealing from Mountaineer Race Track & Gaming Resort in Chester over several years.

Ambler had been convicted in April on 11 counts of mail fraud, 10 counts of wire fraud and four counts of transacting in criminal proceeds.

Besides her prison sentence, Ambler also must pay back the money and forfeit her estate in Reva, Va., along with a vehicle she bought with the stolen funds.
