FAIRMONT, W.Va. (AP) — A 28-year-old Marion County man has been sentenced to 250-1,000 years in prison on multiple counts of sexual assault and abuse of a minor.

Matthew Monroe Cottingham was sentenced Friday in Fairmont by Marion Circuit Judge David R. James. The Fairmont man was sentenced on a total of 20 counts involving a 13-year-old girl.

Marion County prosecuting attorney Patrick Wilson says the sexual assault convictions will be served consecutively.

Wilson said that means Cottingham would have to serve 25 years on every count before he'd be eligible for parole.

The Times West Virginian ( reports that Cottingham was arrested in 2012. His victim told her mother of the abuse.

Wilson said Cottingham indicated he will appeal.
