Weather hotline ready to end unless sponsor found

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) — A telephone hotline that's given the time and weather forecast to callers in the Beckley area for 56 years is about to disappear unless a sponsor steps forward.

Sales manager Debbie Scott of Waukesha, Wis.-based Electronic Tele-Communications Inc. says she's received numerous calls from the community requesting that the service continue. But she says it costs $250 every month for five phone lines.

Scott says she's received interest from potential sponsors, but as of late Thursday afternoon, no commitments. A local car dealership's sponsorship recently ended.

Scott says a final decision whether to pull the plug will be made by the middle of next week.

The Register-Herald ( reports the hotline has been around since 1957.

Interested sponsors can call Scott at 1-888-746-4382, extension 5310.
