W.Va. casino laying off fewer than 50 workers

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) — The general manager of the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races says fewer than 50 employees are being laid off at the Eastern Panhandle property.

Al Britton tells The Journal (http://bit.ly/16yb2h1) it's the result of the nation's sluggish economy and growing competition from casinos in neighboring states.

Charles Town historically drew customers from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., but many of those gamblers are now going to Maryland Live!, a casino in Anne Arundel County.

Britton says revenues for Charles Town have since dropped more than 15 percent.

Another casino is set to open near Baltimore next year, and that could have more detrimental effects.

The West Virginia casino is owned by Pennsylvania-based Penn National Gaming Inc.
