Nitro pays almost $12K in back taxes, penalties

October 22, 2013
Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Nitro's city treasurer has paid almost $12,000 in overlooked payroll taxes and penalties after an IRS audit.

Treasurer John Young says the IRS audited the city's payroll earlier this year after examining the case of a Nitro firefighter who was being paid while off duty to run the city pool.

Auditors determined that the city had made incorrect tax claims for uniform deductions and filed incorrect paperwork for several employees. Young says several employees, including the city attorney, prosecutor and judge, were listed as contractors but should have been listed as city workers.

Young told the Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/1bcwBpY ) he didn't agree with some of the IRS findings and considered fighting them, but a lawyer told him it would be cheaper just to pay the back taxes and penalties.
