ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Department of Transportation is gearing up for winter, and its experimenting with salt brine.
Mike Moran is the engineer for DOT's District 8. He tells the Inter-Mountain of Elkins (http://bit.ly/1hZOZFa) the department plans to expand the use of sale brine to keep the roads clear of ice and snow.
Moran said roads treated with salt brine acts as a sealant between snow and road surface, making snow easier to plow.
The concoction is actually salt mixed with municipal water.
Moran said salt brine is used on Interstate 79 with good results.
