Parkersburg officer accused of abuse reassigned

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin says an officer accused of abusing a suspect has been reassigned to administrative duties.

Martin tells media outlets that the police department is conducting an internal investigation.

Twenty-four-year-old John Sadler's attorney says a video shows an officer putting his hands on Sadler's throat several times, shoving him against a wall and taking him down to the floor.

Morrison says the alleged abuse occurred in August while Sadler was being processed at the Wood County Holding Center. Sadler had been arrested on drunken driving and obstruction charges.

Wood County Prosecuting Attorney Jason Wharton says he has asked the West Virginia State Police to conduct an investigation.

The police chief says neither Sadler nor Morrison has filed a complaint with the police department.
