SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — A section of a Civil War battlefield in Shepherdstown is being protected from development.
The Civil War Trust recently paid $70,000 to acquire six-tenths of an acre that's part of the 1862 Battle of Shepherdstown site. The trust deeded the land to the Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission.
About 265 of the battlefield's approximate 2,500 acres have been preserved.
Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association president Edward Dunleavy tells The Journal (http://bit.ly/179Qone ) that most of the battlefield site is privately owned farms.
The American Battlefield Preservation Association Program and the Shepherdstown association contributed funds for the latest acquisition.
