WEIRTON, W.Va. (AP) — Weirton Mayor George Kondik is seeking the dissolution of the Weirton Area Port Authority.

Kondik has asked the West Virginia Public Port Authority to dissolve the Weirton authority when it meets on Wednesday.

The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register ( ) reports that Kondik made the request in a letter to the state authority's executive director. His letter cites concerns over lawsuits and allegations of non-payment or delinquent payment to vendors.

Weirton port authority chairman B.J. DeFelice tells the newspaper that the non-payment allegations involve the nonprofit Weirton Area Port Authority Inc., not the volunteer authority board.

The nonprofit is the authority's operational arm. The authority is a political subdivision of the state.
