104-year-old Princeton hardware store closes

September 8, 2013
Associated Press

PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) — A century-old hardware store in Princeton has closed its doors.

Customers made their final purchases at Virginia Hardware on Friday. The store opened in 1909.

Owner Ron Hart tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (http://bit.ly/15GHZXN ) that several factors led to his decision to close the store. They include changing demographics, a declining population and the economy.

He says there's also competition from online shopping.

Hart says shoppers should support local businesses while they're still here.
