MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia University Libraries has received another grant to digitize its collection of newspapers published in the state.
WVU says the National Endowment for the Humanities awarded the $135,000 grant to digitize newspapers published from 1836 to 1922.
The NEH had previously awarded a $266,000 grant for the project.
The vast collection is WVU Libraries' contribution to the National Digital Newspaper Program. So far, 39 years and nearly 12,000 issues of Wheeling newspapers have been made available for viewing on the Chronicling America website.
Other newspapers from the period also will be digitized. They include Cooper's Clarksburg Register, Spirit of Jefferson, Star of the Kanawha Valley, Kanawha Valley Star, Monongalia Mirror, American Union, The Weekly Register, The Democrat and The Weston Democrat.
