The two explanations you have offered are not mutually exclusive. I would like to think it is a combination of the two. If one is offered more information about both parties, there is a greater chance of understanding them. If the audience has a greater aptitude for learning, the chances of understanding them are even better. From your test case it appears that when higher educated individuals are given higher doses of propoganda, they will realize that when it comes to political parties there really isn't that big of a difference.
