We Beseech Thee (Hear Them!)
May 11, 2011 - Miranda Stokes
A little bit of Broadway magic comes to New Martinsville this month as the Lincoln Theater Restoration Council and the Wayward players join forces to present the musical Godspell. Performances began last Thursday, and will run this week from May 12-15. Thursday through Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday afternoon show will begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are being sold at the New Martinsville City Building. General admission tickets are $10 and reserved seating is available for $12, but seating is limited. Director Bartolo Cannizzaro adds his unique vision to this modern interpretation of an already modernized version of the gospel according to St. Matthew. After the cast gathers together in fellowship at the start of the play, the show continues with a series of brief parables—each done in a separate musical style as a cast of disciples helps Jesus illuminate his teachings. We follow Jesus and his disciples through the parable of the good son, to the sermon on the mount, the parable of the good samaritan, and finally to the emotional last supper. The audience is presented with an interpretation of biblical events that is simultaneously familiar and unlike any they might have seen previously, bringing a more human quality to these timeless tales. The show also features a full band and eight-person choir to help accentuate the various musical stylings. The cast and crew of Godspell have gone to great efforts to bring an epic musical to our little town. We are fortunate to have this opportunity to see such a well constructed piece of theater. For those who have seen a production of the show before, we beseech you to view this production as well. You are sure to be delighted with the surprises that only live theater can bring. Take part of this taste of local culture this weekend and go see Godspell at the Lincoln Theater.
