January 26, 2011 - Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce
Your Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce has an increasingly busy agenda. Once again, I encourage everyone to attend the Chamber board meetings that are held the last Wednesday of every month at 8am, WVNCC, Room 110.
As reported in the Chronicle, there is a public meeting on Monday, January 31, 7PM, City Chambers, for all those who might be interested in or have an interest in economic development for New Martinsville or the county that will extend into the other cities in the county next year. The Chamber has partnered with Valley Ventures to develop a Master Plan for several areas of New Martinsville, beginning with the downtown district. And if the Chamber's grant is approved, we will also be hiring a part-time Community Economic Developer to work along-side Lou Stein to help implement similar plans through-out the county. As stated by one of our board members, "This is the most ambitious plan the Chamber has undertaken since the development of the Business Park." The Chamber's Economic Development Committee will oversee the progress of our partnership with Valley Ventures. This meeting is a great time to get your questions answered and also to give us your input!!!
Riverfront Development reported at the Chamber meeting that their plans for the boat launch are proceeding on schedule. They have their architectural plans in hand for the boat launch as well as the landscaping and a planned gazebo on their riverfront site. RDC is also currently planning this year's Festival of Memories which is held in July.
The CVB reported that they are currently getting bids for renovations to the museum which will be called the Jim Fitzsimmons Center. Plans are for the renovations to be completed by early summer. The CVB website is also up and active at wetzelcvb.org and mirrors the travel brochure that has already been published and distributed.
The Valued Resources Committee reported that they are investigating implementing a mystery shopper program to help all of us improve our customer service. This type of program generates the kind of feedback we business owners need to help us improve. They will be sending letters to the members of the Chamber to see who might be interested in participating. Or you can contact the Chamber office directly if you want to be included. We businesses that belong to the Chamber could also benefit by better utilizing the activities of the Chamber to promote and network and they are considering offering some type of seminar to cover self-promotion.
Larry Tackett reported that WVNCC has received grant money to purchase welding simulators for training. They are currently looking for a site to hold these vocational classes but will begin with an academic class this spring at WVNCC concerning oil & gas rigs. Anyone interested in this field might want to contact WVNCC.
The Community Engagement committee is currently working on a quality of life brochure to be used as a marketing tool for Wetzel County. If anyone has any input for this, or wishes to help in the creation of this pamphlet, please contact the chamber office.
The Chamber board has two new members who were inducted this morning - both Congratulations and Thank You to Dana Hall, Florentine Arts Center and Brian Rogers, Radio Shack for your time and commitment to Wetzel County!
This year is already starting to fly by, as it always does when you're having fun.
