March 31 Board Meeting

April 13, 2010 - Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce

We had a ribbon cutting ceremony at a new business in Reader - The Inner Beauty Salon.  The ceremony was well attended not only by Chamber members but by friends and family of the owner.  The salon interior has an old world Tuscany feel with a relaxing atmosphere.   A lavish buffet was served to all those who were there.  We wish Amy  Bassett the best of luck in her new venture!

It was reported by RED that Consol Energy has purchased Dominion Gas.  The need for technical/vocational training programs is being addressed by the Wetzel County Schools in conjunction with West Virginia Northern Community College.  State and federal grants will be pursued to implement programs in our county similar to the mine training program currently being held at Hundred High School but will be expanded to an all-encompassing "energy training program".

The Economic Growth committee currently has its Business Retention and Expansion Survey online.  All Chamber members were sent a link to fill out the survey and any and all other businesses are invited to complete the survey at the link provided at the bottom of this blog.  We really need as many businesses in our community as possible to complete this survey so that we will be heading in the right direction in addressing your needs.  If you know a local business owner, please forward this to them for their consideration.

The Riverfront Development Committee is in high gear planning the Festival of Memories to be held in July in downtown New Martinsville.  They are seeking sponsors for free river cruises on the Ruble Sternwheeler.  They have tentatively planned three such cruises as long as sponsors can be found.  To sponsor a free cruise contact Connie Yost with the Riverfront Development Committee.  Sponsorship  for a cruise is $500.00.  Currently they have 3 bands, street musician, the Bill Stokes Magic Show, a bald eagle exhibition, the Ruble Sternwheeler, and of course the very popular fireworks lined up for the event.  As in the past, there will be plenty of activities for the kids.  The Festival of Memories is a great time to create new memories with your family and friends and to share fond memories of the past.

The Chamber also has a new publicity committee comprised of members from all of our local media outlets - newspaper, radio, and TV.  We appreciate their willingness to share their expertise on how to effectively market what is happening in Wetzel County.

The Chamber Awards dinner is coming up soon, Thursday April 29, where we will celebrate the accomplishments of some of our local citizens and organizations.  Please plan to attend and honor the citizens of your community who are making a difference.  Tickets are $20 for chamber members and $25 for non-members.  Call Qulia at the chamber office - 304.455.3825 - to reserve your ticket today!

The Wetzel County Convention & Visitors Bureau reported that they are sponsoring one of the free cruises for the Festival of Memories as well as assisting with TV advertising in the Wheeling and Parkersburg market areas.  The brochure to be located at the WV welcome centers is coming along nicely and will feature parks, recreation, and camping facilities in Wetzel County.  Tentative date for publication is early summer.

On a personal note:  We are so very fortunate to have organizations in this county that work so well together.  The Chamber is working diligently to improve the business climate in Wetzel County and I urge you to support your Chamber's efforts and activities.  The Chamber board meetings are open to the public and held the last Wednesday of every month at 8AM at WVNCC.   The Chamber Executive committee (the officers of the Chamber and Pillar Chairpersons) meets twice a month.  The other committee meetings are held through-out the month and you can check with the chairpersons of the individual committees or directly with the Chamber office to find our how you can get involved.  You don't have to be a member of the Chamber to work on one of the committees or to help with one of the events.   Our goal is to work in cooperation with other organizations within Wetzel County to better the quality of life for all.

Just a reminder:  Below is the link for the Business Retention and Expansion Survey.  Please forward to any business person you know for their consideration.  Thank you so much, Sandy
